Palace Secrets and Desert Races: 5 Anime Picks for Fall 2026

Mysteries driven by medical knowledge, romance intertwined with sporting ambition, and adventures spanning magic, combat and the bizarre. Five picks to help you decide what to add to your watchlist this fall.

Five different worlds, from mystery and romance to comedy, fantasy and adventure.

Choosing your next anime becomes easier when you know what kind of experience you want. You might want to follow characters whose motivations you understand, need some fast-paced comedy, or prefer entering a world that leaves you with questions worth exploring.

That is why we have brought together five titles offering different kinds of enjoyment. Our criteria are the clarity of each premise, the reasons its characters and conflicts give us to keep watching, and how well each pick suits a particular taste. We present them in no order of preference, focusing on season openings and ongoing returns during this period; assessing the coherence of complete seasons will have to wait until their full run is available.

Viewing guidance: This selection is best suited to viewers aged 15 and over; the nature of the content varies between titles.

The Apothecary Diaries: Season Three

When understanding details becomes a way to understand people

The Apothecary Diaries — Maomao’s knowledge opens the door to mystery, while relationships give the clues their meaning.

The appeal of The Apothecary Diaries rests on a heroine who approaches the world with a mind searching for explanations. Maomao knows about medicines and poisons, but living among people with different interests and positions makes applying that knowledge more complicated than simply finding the right answer.

Season three began its Japanese broadcast on 2 October 2026, expanding the story beyond the palace and putting Maomao and Jinshi through new tests. OLM handles the animation production for this season.

What makes this premise worth recommending to us is the relationship between discovering the truth and being able to act on it. In a world governed by status and self-interest, someone may understand what happened while remaining limited in their freedom to speak or intervene. Here, an investigation can reveal as much about society as it does about the circumstances of a case.

From this perspective, we can appreciate the value of a measured opening: giving the relationships and circumstances surrounding a case room to develop helps later questions carry weight. We recommend it to anyone who enjoys piecing together clues, reading motivations and following the effect of power on individual lives. It is best to reach season three after watching the first two seasons, so the relationships retain their accumulated depth and meaning.

Blue Box: Season Two

Feelings competing for the same time a dream demands

Blue Box — a space where everyday feelings meet sporting ambition.

Taiki finds himself divided between his dedication to badminton and his feelings for Chinatsu, the basketball player he meets during morning practice. Blue Box brings these two paths together in a school setting that gives sporting ambition and emotional closeness shared space. Its second season launched in Japan on 4 October 2026, with animation production by Electric Circus.

We recommend this combination because sport and romance demand similar resources from the characters: time, attention and the ability to cope with failure. Growing closer to someone may give you motivation, but it also raises questions about your priorities and the image of yourself you want to present.

We see room here for drama whose significance comes from the characters’ age and circumstances. A brief conversation or hesitation about expressing a feeling can occupy the mind of someone who also has training, competition and a goal to pursue. When both people retain ambitions of their own, growing closer becomes a relationship that requires ongoing understanding.

We recommend the season to viewers who prefer romance that grows through everyday life and enjoy observing the distance between feeling something and expressing it. Watching season one remains the right starting point for understanding the relationships the new instalment continues.

Ranma ½: Season Three

Personal rivalries finding their way into the ring

Ranma ½ — rivalries and relationships that make combat part of the comedy.

The chaos begins with a family agreement to engage Ranma Saotome to Akane Tendo, then grows more complicated because of a curse that turns Ranma into a girl with cold water and restores his male form with hot water. This simple rule creates situations in which relationships, rivalries and misunderstandings become intertwined.

Season three opens one of its confrontations with a challenge from Ryoga to Ranma, bringing their rivalry back to the forefront.

What attracts us to this kind of martial arts comedy is that a confrontation has personal meaning before it begins. Pride, jealousy and the desire to prove oneself can turn a minor disagreement into a major crisis, then make the result of the fight material for another comic situation.

That is why we recommend Ranma ½ to anyone who likes quick-tempered characters, situations that escalate through their actions, and fighting that helps deliver the joke. Exaggeration is central to the experience, and enjoying it depends on embracing that rhythm.

If you are only now discovering the modern adaptation, watching its first and second seasons gives you the chance to understand the network of relationships that feed into one another as the chaos spreads.

Magic Knight Rayearth: The 2026 Adaptation

Three heroines facing a world that needs to be understood and saved

Magic Knight Rayearth — three heroines on a journey to discover a new world and shoulder its responsibilities.

During a visit to Tokyo Tower, Hikaru, Umi and Fuu are transported to the world of Cephiro. There, their mission involves saving Princess Emeraude and a world under threat. This is the starting point offered by the new adaptation of Magic Knight Rayearth.

The anime began airing in Japan on 7 October 2026, with animation production handled by E&H production.

We recommend it here because its opening gives the viewer a clear goal while leaving the details of its world open to discovery. The heroines themselves need to understand the place they have reached, linking the discovery of its rules to their immediate problem: how do they deal with a responsibility they have not prepared for?

Having three characters at the heart of the journey allows for different responses to fear and the unknown. For us, this is an angle worth following in a story about heroism: accepting the mission and learning to bear its demands can be part of the adventure itself.

This is a suitable pick for anyone seeking a fantasy journey with a clear foundation that introduces new characters and a new world. You can begin with the 2026 adaptation to discover its approach to the story from the start.

STEEL BALL RUN JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

A race with a clear goal, and an adventure reaching beyond it

STEEL BALL RUN JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure — a race bringing together personal motivations, competition and the bizarre.

In America in 1890, a horse race sets off across the continent. Johnny Joestar, a former jockey who has lost the use of his legs, finds hope in a mysterious phenomenon connected to Gyro Zeppeli and decides to enter. The race brings the two characters together, while each retains his own motivation.

A scheduling detail explains its place on our list: the opening episode was released on 19 March 2026, then weekly releases resumed on 25 September 2026. We therefore recommend it among the titles you can follow this fall, treating this period as a return to continue its run.

We chose it for the strength of the framework that contains its strangeness. The race gives the story a direction we can follow, while the racers’ motivations and mysterious phenomena open the door to conflicts beyond winning alone. For us, this combination gives the exploration a dramatic foundation: we understand what drives the characters forward even as the nature of the dangers grows more complicated.

We recommend it to anyone who enjoys adventures with unconventional rules and relationships formed under the pressure of travel and competition. Start with the opening episode, because Johnny’s decision to enter and his relationship with Gyro form the foundation for the current return.

Where should you start?

Begin with the previous seasons if you choose The Apothecary Diaries, Blue Box or Ranma ½; the accumulated relationships are an important part of their appeal. Magic Knight Rayearth offers an entry point into a new take on its story, while the journey of STEEL BALL RUN JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure begins with its opening episode before moving on to the weekly continuation.

Choose according to the kind of attention you want to give your viewing: concentration on clues, an interest in emotional details, or an appetite for comedy and adventure. That is the question we believe makes a recommendation useful to you.
