Between repentance and violence

Sakamoto Days builds its identity on one irresistible contradiction: the world's most feared assassin is now an overweight father whose convenience store rules matter more than his legend. The series mixes violent invention with domestic warmth and asks whether a peaceful present can survive a past that refuses to die. Its charm is immediate; its execution is more hesitant.

The story

Legendary hitman Taro Sakamoto retires to run a convenience store and live quietly with his family. When the underworld places a price on his head, he must defend that peace without surrendering to the killer he used to be.

A brilliant premise in search of momentum

The opening rapidly establishes Sakamoto's lethal history, then cuts to a quiet marriage, fatherhood and store life. That time jump creates permanent external conflict (old enemies return) and internal conflict between the identities of father, shopkeeper and former killer. It is a strong dramatic engine the season does not always run at full speed.

After a confident premiere, the pace drops into introductions and everyday comedy before the bounty plot gathers force. The screenplay also leaves the reason for such concentrated pursuit underdeveloped. Revenge, institutional strategy or betrayal could each sustain the mystery, but the season must eventually commit to consequences rather than only targets of the week.

Comedy, exposition and an underused ensemble

Dialogue carries both exposition and jokes, often using mind-reading and inner monologue to deliver background quickly. The device is efficient but reduces the pleasure of discovery, and repeated explanation blurs the line between serious danger and comedy. Sakamoto is a rich concept, while Shin, Lu and the wider team still need deeper decisions and sacrifices to become equally memorable.

Action inspired by objects and physical comedy

The direction is strongest when Sakamoto weaponizes whatever surrounds him, recalling the practical wit and spatial clarity of Jackie Chan. These encounters translate the series' moral contradiction into movement: he remains terrifyingly capable while trying not to kill. Some fights, however, lack fluid connective animation and arrive as good ideas with incomplete physical payoff.

Lighting occasionally creates a convincing cinematic darkness, and the animation pays welcome attention to Sakamoto's two physical states: agile legend and gentle, heavy shopkeeper. Uneven episode quality and character designs that sometimes lose distinctiveness keep the visual identity from becoming fully confident.

Voices balancing legend and family

The lead performances give Sakamoto a reserved, formidable presence, although the paternal side could use more vocal warmth. Supporting voices inject energy and humor, but tonal variety is not always sufficient to mark the transition from domestic joke to lethal threat. Sound understands the contradiction; it realizes it only in part.

Final verdict

Sakamoto Days is an unusually likable mixture of action and family comedy, held together by a hero whose peace is more interesting than his violence. Its first season wavers in pace, visual consistency and narrative focus, but the central character and warmth of his chosen world are strong enough to make the promised continuation worth waiting for.
